Lots and lots of Skulls
Okay, so recently i have been trying to learn how to draw skulls, and more importantly in a way that is my own kind of style. I figured I would use the fact that my band could do with a decent poster as a chance to whack out some skull sketches.
I think it was Godmachine's work where he mixed up and eye and a skull so that idea has been playing on me a little bit I just obviously didn't want my sketch to be a straight copy of his drawing. I got the idea for the tentacles of Ben Templesmith, bless him and his squid fixation.

For months now I have been thinking about drawing this particular image up, but it never clicked in my head that I could potentially use it as my bands poster, I dont know why but I just didn't make the connection between work and band.
The idea is a skeleton in an old fashion divers suit, down in the dark and all alone. I got the idea after walking past my brother watching Mythbusters and seeing that if the air tube was cut on an old fashioned diver suit the whole body would crush into the metal helmet due to pressure, gruesome stuff. Ever since ive been planning on drawing that. here are some sketch ideas.

FAIL
Ok...so the whole updating everyday thing has been a bit of a failure so far, but hey, what you gonna do? I have a cool little drawing that i shall upload a bit later today, after my band practice.
ok, things to talk about... MUSIC! here are some of my favourite albums ever.
1. In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 - Coheed and Cambria
My absolute favourite band ever, bar none. There is no argument that this is the best album they put out, its pretty much perfect to me. I used to be able to play the whole thing on guitar (except 2113)
2. Everybody Into Position - Oceansize
My girlfriend got me into this band really recently with the promise that "every song is really epic" and she really wasnt wrong! youtube Music for a Nurse.
3. Fortress - Protest the Hero
This album is ridiculously technical in terms of guitar, if you do play guitar and you haven't heard of this band, leave your computer now, head into town and pick this up, it will make you want to sit in your room forever bettering your guitar playing.
4. Hit The Lights - Metallica
Alot of people need a good clip round the ear when it comes to Metallica, they were a THRASH band, so much so that they were part of the big four, but now with have to put up with pretty average mainstream Metallica, its really sad. Thrash is a huge genre to me, its just so fucking metal, and to be completely honest metallica stopped being thrash after Master of Puppets. Get this and relish in raw, early Metallica
5. Necroticism - Decanting the Insalubrious - Carcass
Death metal is another genre i absolutley love and this album is probably my favourite death album ever (Death's Human just lost out) its full of awesome riffs and crushing grooves, get rid of any prejudice about "screamy music" and give this a listen.

Means to an End
Hmmm... Missed a post yesterday, not too hung up about it though, was out celebrating my girls birthday week, good times. Ok here is at least the start of the Logo for 'Means to an End' my friends band. Im not sure... i think it needs something, maybe the guys from the band could tell me themselves, but if they are happy with it, its theirs. Just so its on record, I Fucking Love doing work for Jay Hodgkinson, it gives me room to be evil with work! keep it coming man!

Influences
Ok. I did have new work to put up tonight for the band "Means to an End", however due to me not being at home I dont have access to a scanner to put that up. Either way I thought I would take the chance to write about some of my biggest influences in terms of art.
First, let me talk about one of the biggest influences on me, a certain mr Ben Templesmith, This love started after seeing his work on the comic Dying Inside, a Story based within the Silent Hill world. The dark style suited the subject matter down to the ground, making the comic one of my all time favourites. Since then I have continued to follow his work and even met the man himself. One of the best days ever, he looked through my portfolio at the time and was impressed, its always cool to hear that from your hero! He signed my now out of print Templesmith art books, so those are now treasured possessions.

Next up is another huge influence, infact so much so that he made me take a bit of a break from comics and realise that there is so much more I could do. The awesome GodMachine. He does alot of work for various bands, I came into contact with him when I saw his work for the band Ignominous Incarceration which jus happened to be a friend's cousin's band, which again is pretty cool.

Another artist I love with a similar style is Dan Mumford, again an artist who works with alot of bands, but discovering this artist is completely down to my Awesome designer friend Liam Twelve asking me to "make my work more Mumford-like". Im so glad he did.

The latest artist to make me go "Shit! i need to pick up my pencil a little more!" is Sin Eater, this guy is a local illustrator and has completely opened up my eyes to how much more potential there is in my favourite medium, Ink. His inkwork and patterns absolutley blow my mind and make me realise just how much harder im gonna have to work to get good at this. In all honesty I get a little star struck when I see this guy around Hereford, but I can't bring myself to ask him how he produces his work haha!

Finally (at least for now) Alex Pardee. This guys line work is Insane, this guy made me drop my pens for a bit and focus on nothing but brush and i think i have bettered myself for it. The cute-Horror aspect of it really appeals to me, I love how you can look at some parts and they are pleasant and you can look at other parts of the same piece and they are quite horrific. pure briliance.
